Противу дерзости искусством воружась, Вандалам новым сеть поставил
Had found a way to curb the foe’s presumptuous hear, The modern Vandals snared to ruin

И на погибель им Москву оставил,
And left them Moscow town to their undoing,
↺
Тогда все жители, и малый и большой,
Then all, the great and small, each blessed soul alive,

Часа не тратя, собралися
Packed up without an hour’s delay
↺
И вон из стен московских поднялися,
And from the walls of Moscow streamed away
↺
Как из улья пчелиный рой.
Like swarm of bees that leaves the hive.

Ворона с кровли тут на эту всю тревогу
A crow upon a roof that slowly cleaned her beak
↺
Спокойно, чистя нос, глядит.
Surveyed the tumult, perched apart.
↺
"А ты что ж, кумушка, в дорогу? -
“ Why, friend, it’s surely time to start?”
↺
Ей с возу Курица кричит. -
Called out a hen upon a cart;
↺
Ведь говорят, что у порогу
“Stands at the gate, even while I speak,
↺
Наш супостат".
Our ruthless foe.”

"Мне что до этого за дело? -
“And where’s the harm in that for me?”
↺
Вещунья ей в ответ.
The augur bird replies:
↺
- Я здесь останусь смело.
“I’ll hold my own, you’ll see;
↺
Вот ваши сестры - как хотят;
You chicken-hearts, that want to, go!
↺
А ведь Ворон ни жарят, ни варят:
But folk will neither roast nor stew a crow.
↺
Так мне с гостьми не мудрено ужиться,
We’ll get on well enough, our guests and I,
↺
А может быть, еще удастся поживиться
Who knows but I may find some dainty snacks of food,
↺
Сырком иль косточкой, иль чем-нибудь.
A bit of cheese, a bone or something good?
↺
Прощай, хохлаточка, счастливый путь!"
Good luck, dear Henny, on the road! Good-bye!”

Ворона подлинно осталась;
So Crow, she stayed behind.
↺
Но вместо всех поживок ей,
What else? Why, stead of snacks her board to embellish,
↺
Как голодом морить Смоленский стал гостей -
When, in Smolensky’s clutch, the French took in their belts,

Она сама к ним в суп попалась.
They cooked the crow as well, to give their soup a relish.

Так часто человек в расчетах слеп и глуп.
As blind, as foolish oft do human reckonings show.

За счастьем, кажется, ты по пятам несешься:
You’re close on Fortune’s heels; you think you’ll catch the jade,
↺
А как на деле с ним сочтешься -
And, when the last accounts are made,
↺
Попался, как ворона в суп!
You’re in the soup, just like our crow.
