Жила-была кухарка, звали ее Гретель; носила она башмаки на красных каблуках, и как выйдет, бывало, в них из дому, повернется то в одну, то в другую сторону, обрадуется и подумает:
There was once a cook named Grethel, who wore shoes with red rosettes, and when she walked out with them on, she turned herself this way and that, and thought,

«А я, однако, девушка красивая».
"You certainly are a pretty girl!"

Вернется домой, хлебнет на радостях глоток вина, а после того, конечно, и есть захочется, вот и начнет она пробовать самое вкусное, что готовит к обеду; все попробует, пока не наестся вдосталь, потом скажет:
And when she came home she drank, in her gladness of heart, a draught of wine, and as wine excites a desire to eat, she tasted the best of whatever she was cooking until she was satisfied, and said,

— Ведь кухарка должна знать, вкусная ли пища.
"The cook must know what the food is like."

Вот раз хозяин ей и говорит: — Гретель, нынче ко мне гость придет; зажарь мне две курицы, да смотри, чтоб повкусней вышло.
It came to pass that the master one day said to her, "Grethel, there is a guest coming this evening; prepare me two fowls very daintily."

— Ладно, хозяин, я уж сготовлю, — ответила Гретель.
"I will see to it, master," answered Grethel.

Зарезала она кур, обварила их кипятком, ощипала, насадила на вертел и понесла их в печь жариться, а дело было уже под вечер.
She killed two fowls, scalded them, plucked them, put them on the spit, and towards evening set them before the fire, that they might roast.

Начали куры поджариваться и были совсем готовы, а гость все не являлся.
The fowls began to turn brown, and were nearly ready, but the guest had not yet arrived.

Вот и говорит Гретель хозяину: — Если гость не придет, то надо кур из печи вынуть, какая будет досада, если их тотчас не съесть, ведь они-то сейчас в самом соку!
Then Grethel called out to her master, "If the guest does not come, I must take the fowls away from the fire, but it will be a sin and a shame if they are not eaten directly, when they are juiciest."

Хозяин говорит: — Ну, раз так, то я сам побегу за гостем.
The master said, "I will run myself, and fetch the guest."

Только хозяин ушел, отставила Гретель вертел с курами в сторону, а сама подумала:
When the master had turned his back, Grethel laid the spit with the fowls on one side, and thought,

«Если долго придется стоять у печки, то еще вспотеешь и пить захочется: почем знать, когда они там явятся, — сбегаю-ка я в погреб и перехвачу глоточек».
"Standing so long by the fire there, makes one hot and thirsty; who knows when they will come? Meanwhile, I will run into the cellar, and take a drink."

Спустилась она в погреб, подставила кружку и говорит: — Да поможет тебе господь бог, Гретель, — и хлебнула порядочный глоток, а потом ещё один.
She ran down, set a jug, said, "God bless it to thy use, Grethel," and took a good drink, and took yet another hearty draught.

Пришла она и поставила кур снова на огонь, помазала их маслом и стала весело поворачивать вертел.
Then she went and put the fowls down again to the fire, basted them, and drove the spit merrily round.

А жаркое пахло так вкусно, что Гретель подумала: «Мне будто чего-то недостает, надо бы кур отведать!»,
But as the roast meat smelt so good, Grethel thought, "Something might be wrong, it ought to be tasted!"

потрогала она их пальцем и говорит: — Ой, какие вкусные куры! Прямо-таки грешно не есть их теперь же!
She touched it with her finger, and said, "Ah! how good fowls are! It certainly is a sin and a shame that they are not eaten directly!"

Подбежала она к окошку поглядеть, не идет ли хозяин с гостем, видит — нет никого. Подошла она снова к курам и подумала:
She ran to the window, to see if the master was not coming with his guest, but she saw no one, and went back to the fowls and thought,

«Одно крылышко подгорело, будет лучше, если я его съем».
"One of the wings is burning! I had better take it off and eat it."

Отрезала она его, съела, и как же оно ей по вкусу пришлось! Съела она и подумала:
So she cut it off, ate it, and enjoyed it, and when she had done, she thought,

«Надо будет и другое отрезать, а не то хозяин заметит, что чего-то недостает».
"the other must go down too, or else master will observe that something is missing."
