Три девицы под окном
Three fair maidens, late one night,
↺
Пряли поздно вечерком.
Sat and spun by candlelight.

«Кабы я была царица, —
"Were our tsar to marry me,"
↺
Говорит одна девица, —
Said the eldest of the three,
↺
То на весь крещеный мир
"I would cook and I would bake–
↺
Приготовила б я пир».
Oh, what royal feasts I'd make."

«Кабы я была царица, — Говорит ее сестрица, —
Said the second of the three: "Were our tsar to marry me,
↺
То на весь бы мир одна Наткала я полотна».
I would weave a cloth of gold Fair and wondrous to behold."

«Кабы я была царица, —
But the youngest of the three
↺
Третья молвила сестрица, —
Murmured: "If he married me–
↺
Я б для батюшки-царя Родила богатыря».
I would give our tsar an heir Handsome, brave, beyond compare."

At these words their chamber door
↺
Дверь тихонько заскрыпела,
Gently creaked– and lo, before
↺
И в светлицу входит царь, Стороны той государь.
These three maidens' very eyes Stood their tsar, to their surprise.

Во всё время разговора
He had listened by their gate
↺
Он стоял позадь забора;
Whither he'd been led by fate,
↺
Речь последней по всему
And the words that he heard last
↺
Полюбилася ему.
Made his heart with love beat fast.
↺
«Здравствуй, красная девица, —
"Greetings, maiden fair," said he–
↺
Говорит он, — будь царица
"My tsaritsa you shall be,
↺
И роди богатыря Мне к исходу сентября.
And, ere next September's done, See that you bear me a son.
↺
Вы ж, голубушки-сестрицы,
As for you, fair sisters two,
↺
Выбирайтесь из светлицы,
Leave your home without ado;
↺
Поезжайте вслед за мной,
Leave your home and follow me
↺
Вслед за мной и за сестрой:
And my bride that is to be.
↺
Будь одна из вас ткачиха,
Royal weaver, YOU I'll make,
↺
А другая повариха».
YOU as royal cook I'll take."

В сени вышел царь-отец.
Then the tsar strode forth, and they
↺
Все пустились во дворец.
Palacewards all made their way.
↺
Царь недолго собирался:
There, he lost no time nor tarried
↺
В тот же вечер обвенчался.
That same evening he was married;
↺
Царь Салтан за пир честной
Tsar Saltan and his young bride

Сел с царицей молодой;
At the feast sat side by side.
↺
А потом честные гости
Then the guests, with solemn air,
↺
На кровать слоновой кости
Led the newly wedded pair
↺
Положили молодых
To their iv'ry couch, snow-white,
↺
И оставили одних.
Where they left them for the night.
↺
В кухне злится повариха,
Bitterly, the weaver sighed,
↺
Плачет у станка ткачиха,
And the cook in passion cried,
↺
И завидуют оне
Full of jealousy and hate
↺
Государевой жене.
Of their sister's happy fate.
↺
А царица молодая, Дела вдаль не отлагая, С первой ночи понесла.
But, by love and duty fired, She conceived, ere night expired, In her royal husband's arms.

В те поры война была.
These were days of war's alarms.
↺
Царь Салтан, с женой простяся, На добра-коня садяся,
Ere he rode forth for the strife, Tsar Saltan embraced his wife,

Ей наказывал себя
Bidding her to take good care
↺
Поберечь, его любя.
Of herself and coming heir;
↺
Между тем, как он далёко
While he battled on the field,
↺
Бьется долго и жестоко,
Forcing countless foes to yield,
↺
Наступает срок родин;
God gave unto her an heir–
↺
Сына бог им дал в аршин,
Lusty, large of limb, and fair.
↺
И царица над ребенком
Like a mother eagle, she
↺
Как орлица над орленком;
Guarded him most jealously;
↺
Шлет с письмом она гонца,
Sent the news of God's glad gift
↺
Чтоб обрадовать отца.
To the tsar, by rider swift.
↺
А ткачиха с поварихой,
But the royal cook, and weaver,
↺
С сватьей бабой Бабарихой,
And their mother, sly deceiver,
↺
Извести ее хотят,
Sought to ruin her, so they
↺
Перенять гонца велят;
Had him kidnapped on the way,
↺
Сами шлют гонца другого
Sent another in his stead.
↺

Word for word, his message read:

«Родила царица в ночь
"Your tsaritsa, sire, last night
↺
Не то сына, не то дочь;
Was delivered of a fright–
↺
Не мышонка, не лягушку,
Neither son nor daughter, nor
↺
А неведому зверюшку».
Have we seen its like before."

Как услышал царь-отец,
At these words, the royal sire
↺
Что донес ему гонец,
Raved and raged in furious ire,
↺
В гневе начал он чудесить
"Hang that messenger!" roared he,
↺
И гонца хотел повесить;
"Hang him on the nearest tree!"
↺
Но, смягчившись на сей раз,
But, relenting, spared him, and
↺
Дал гонцу такой приказ:
Sent him back with this command:
↺
«Ждать царева возвращенья
"From all hasty steps refrain
↺
Для законного решенья».
Till the tsar comes home again."
↺
Едет с грамотой гонец,
Back the messenger rode fast,
↺
И приехал наконец.
Reached the city gates at last.
↺
А ткачиха с поварихой,
But the royal cook, and weaver,
↺
С сватьей бабой Бабарихой,
With their mother, sly deceiver,
↺
