When cobblers take to making pies,

А сапоги тачать пирожник:
And cook his hand at cobbling tries,

И дело не пойдет на лад,
You’ll look for useful work in vain;

Да и примечено стократ,
A hundred times it has been plain,
↺
Что кто за ремесло чужое браться любит,
There’s no more hardened fool nor more inane
↺
Тот завсегда других упрямей и вздорней;
Than he who leaves his trade, his neighbor’s job to spoil.
↺
Он лучше дело все погубит
He’d rather squander all his toil,
↺
И рад скорей
He’d rather live
↺
Посмешищем стать света,
A laughing-stock on earth,
↺
Чем у честных и знающих людей
Thank go to men of sense and worth
↺
Спросить иль выслушать разумного совета.
And ask or hear the counsel they can give.
↺
Зубастой Щуке в мысль пришло
The pike with jagged teeth once thought, how nice
↺
За кошачье приняться ремесло.
To set up as a cat and catch some mice!
↺
Не знаю: завистью ее лукавый мучил
Perhaps the Evil One inspired the envious wish;
↺
Иль, может быть, ей рыбный стол наскучил?
Perhaps he’d simply had enough of fish; Well, be it as it may,
↺
Но только вздумала Кота она просить,
He came to Thomas Cat: ‘Oh, Tom, don’t say me nay!
↺
Чтоб взял ее с собой он на охоту
Arrange some sport in Huggins’ barn,
↺
Мышей в амбаре половить.
And take me musing for the day!”

"Да полно, знаешь ли ты эту, свет, работу? –
“Come, come! But that’s a trade one has to learn!”
↺
Стал Щуке Васька говорить.
Says Thomas in a friendly way;
↺
- Смотри, кума, чтобы не осрамиться:
“Look out, my lad, or you may meet disaster,
↺
Недаром говорится,
It’s not for nought that people say,
↺
Что дело мастера боится". –
The work should fear its master.”
↺
"И, полно, куманек!
“What stuff you talk ,dear boy!
↺
Вот невидаль: мышей!
That mice my wits should tax!
↺
Мы лавливали и ершей". –
What me! That caught the stickle-backs!”
↺
"Так в добрый час, пойдем!"
“Come on then, here’s to luck!”
↺
Пошли, засели.
They went, they waited:
↺
Натешился, наелся Кот,
And Tom had sport and soon was sated;
↺
И кумушку проведать он идет;
He thought he’d see if Jack was sound and hale;
↺
А Щука, чуть жива, лежит, разинув рот, -
But there lay Jack, so pale, Mouth open, eyes dilated;
↺
И крысы хвост у ней отъели.
The rats had gnawed away his tail!
↺
Тут видя, что куме совсем не в силу труд,
So finding work like this his partner’s strength beyond,
↺
Кум замертво стащил ее обратно в пруд.
Tom dragged him back half-dead and got him to the pond;
↺
И дельно!
“And serve you right!” says he.
↺
Это, Щука,
“Perhaps, Jack Pike,
↺
Тебе наука:
You’ll know now what it’s like;
↺
Вперед умнее быть
So now I hope you’ll wiser be,
↺
И за мышами не ходить.
And leave the mice to me.”
