Однажды бурмистр из дальней вотчины, Антон Васильев, окончив барыне Арине Петровне Головлевой доклад о своей поездке в Москву для сбора оброков с проживающих по паспортам крестьян и уже получив от нее разрешение идти в людскую, вдруг как-то таинственно замялся на месте, словно бы за ним было еще какое-то слово и дело, о котором он и решался и не решался доложить.
Anton Vasilyev, the manager of a remote estate, was giving his mistress, Arina Petrovna Golovliov, an account of his trip to Moscow. He had gone there to collect the money due from those of her peasant serfs who bought the right to live in the city by paying her a tax. When he had finished with his report, she told him he might retire, but he lingered on irresolutely, as though he had something else to say, yet could not make up his mind to say it.

Арина Петровна, которая насквозь понимала не только малейшие телодвижения, но и тайные помыслы своих приближенных людей, немедленно обеспокоилась.
Arina Petrovna knew her servants through and through; she knew the meaning of their slightest gestures, she could even divine their inmost thoughts. And her steward's manner immediately aroused her disquietude.

— Что еще? — спросила она, смотря на бурмистра в упор.
"What else?" she asked, looking at him keenly.

— Все-с, — попробовал было отвернуть Антон Васильев.
"That's all," he replied evasively.

— Не ври! еще есть! по глазам вижу!
"Don't lie. There is something else. I can see it by your eyes."

Антон Васильев, однако ж, не решался ответить и продолжал переступать с ноги на ногу.
Anton Vasilyev still hesitated and continued to shift from one foot to the other.

— Сказывай, какое еще дело за тобой есть? — решительным голосом прикрикнула на него Арина Петровна, — говори! не виляй хвостом… сума переметная!
"What is it? Tell me!" she shouted imperiously. "Out with it, out with it! And don't wag your whole body like a dog, Telltale!"

Арина Петровна любила давать прозвища людям, составлявшим ее административный и домашний персонал.
Arina Petrovna liked to call her managers and domestics by nicknames.

Антона Васильева она прозвала «переметной сумой» не за то, чтоб он в самом деле был когда-нибудь замечен в предательстве, а за то, что был слаб на язык.
She used Telltale for Anton Vasilyev, not because she had found him to carry gossip treacherously, but simply because he had a loose tongue.

Имение, в котором он управлял, имело своим центром значительное торговое село, в котором было большое число трактиров.
The centre of the estate that he managed was an important trading village in which there were many taverns.

Антон Васильев любил попить чайку в трактире, похвастаться всемогуществом своей барыни и во время этого хвастовства незаметным образом провирался.
He liked to take a glass of tea in a tavern and boast of his mistress's great power. And in the course of his boasting he would sometimes unconsciously blab out secrets.

А так как у Арины Петровны постоянно были в ходу различные тяжбы, то частенько случалось, что болтливость доверенного человека выводила наружу барынины военные хитрости прежде, нежели они могли быть приведены в исполнение.
His mistress was always with a lawsuit on her hands, so that her trusty's garrulousness sometimes brought her sly stratagems to the surface before they could be executed.

— Есть, действительно… — пробормотал наконец Антон Васильев.
"Yes, I have got something else to say," Anton finally mumbled.

— Что? что такое? — взволновалась Арина Петровна.
"What is it?" Arina Petrovna asked excitedly.

Как женщина властная и притом в сильной степени одаренная творчеством, она в одну минуту нарисовала себе картину всевозможных противоречий и противодействий и сразу так усвоила себе эту мысль, что даже побледнела и вскочила с кресла.
An imperious woman, with an extraordinarily lively imagination, she instantly pictured all sorts of disagreeable opposition and antagonism, and the thought so instantly took complete possession of her that she turned white and jumped up from her chair.

— Степан Владимирыч дом-то в Москве продали… — доложил бурмистр с расстановкой.
"Stepan Vladimirych's house in Moscow has been sold," Anton said after a pause.

— Ну?
"Well?"
↺
— Продали-с.
"It's been sold."
↺
— Почему? как? не мни! сказывай!
"Why? How? Tell me."
↺
— За долги… так нужно полагать!
"For debts, I suppose.
↺
Известно, за хорошие дела продавать не станут.
Of course it can't be because of something nice."
