Зимним деньком, в то время как снег валил хлопьями, сидела одна королева и шила под окошечком, у которого рама была черного дерева.
It was the middle of winter, and the snow- flakes were falling like feathers from the sky, and a queen sat at her window working, and her embroidery-frame was of ebony.

Шила она и на снег посматривала, и уколола себе иглой палец до крови.
And as she worked, gazing at times out on the snow, she pricked her finger, and there fell from it three drops of blood on the snow.

И подумала королева про себя:
And when she saw how bright and red it looked, she said to herself,
↺
«Ах, если бы у меня родился ребеночек белый, как снег, румяный, как кровь, и чернявый, как черное дерево!»
"Oh that I had a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as the wood of the embroidery frame!"

И вскоре желание ее точно исполнилось: родилась у ней доченька – белая, как снег, румяная, как кровь, и черноволосая; и была за свою белизну названа Белоснежкой.
Not very long after she had a daughter, with a skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as black as ebony, and she was named Snow-white.

И чуть только родилась доченька, королева-мать и умерла. Год спустя король женился на другой. Эта вторая жена его была красавица,
And when she was born the queen died. After a year had gone by the king took another wife, a beautiful woman,

но и горда, и высокомерна, и никак не могла потерпеть, чтобы кто-нибудь мог с нею сравняться в красоте.
but proud and overbearing, and she could not bear to be surpassed in beauty by any one.

Притом у нее было такое волшебное зеркальце, перед которым она любила становиться, любовалась собой и говаривала:
She had a magic looking-glass, and she used to stand before it, and look in it, and say,

Зеркальце, зеркальце, молви скорей, Кто здесь всех краше, кто всех милей?
"Looking-glass upon the wall, Who is fairest of us all?"

Тогда и отвечало ей зеркальце:
And the looking-glass would answer,
↺
Ты, королева, всех здесь милей.
"You are fairest of them all."
↺
И она отходила от зеркальца довольная- предовольная и знала, что зеркальце ей неправды не скажет.
And she was contented, for she knew that the looking-glass spoke the truth.

Белоснежка же между тем подрастала и хорошела, и уже по восьмому году она была прекрасна, как ясный день.
Now, Snow-white was growing prettier and prettier, and when she was seven years old she was as beautiful as day, far more so than the queen herself.

И когда королева однажды спросила у зеркальца:
So one day when the queen went to her mirror and said,
↺
Зеркальце, зеркальце, молви скорей, Кто здесь всех краше, кто всех милей?
"Looking-glass upon the wall, Who is fairest of us all?"

Зеркальце отвечало ей:
It answered,
↺
Ты, королева, красива собой; А все же Белоснежка выше красой.
"Queen, you are full fair, 'tis true, But Snow-white fairer is than you."

Ужаснулась королева, пожелтела, позеленела от зависти. С того часа, как, бывало, увидит Белоснежку, так у ней сердце от злобы на части разорваться готово.
This gave the queen a great shock, and she became yellow and green with envy, and from that hour her heart turned against Snow-white, and she hated her.

И зависть с гордостью, словно сорные травы, так и стали возрастать в ее сердце, и разрастаться все шире и шире, так что наконец ни днем, ни ночью не стало ей покоя.
And envy and pride like ill weeds grew in her heart higher every day, until she had no peace day or night.

И вот позвала она однажды своего псаря и сказала:
At last she sent for a huntsman, and said,
↺
«Выведи эту девчонку в лес, чтобы она мне более на глаза не попадалась. Убей ее и в доказательство того, что мое приказание исполнено, принеси мне ее легкое и печень».
"Take the child out into the woods, so that I may set eyes on her no more. You must put her to death, and bring me her heart for a token."

Псарь повиновался, вывел девочку из дворца в лес, и как вынул свой охотничий нож, чтобы пронзить невинное сердце Белоснежки, та стала плакать и просить:
The huntsman consented, and led her away; but when he drew his cutlass to pierce Snow-white's innocent heart, she began to weep, and to say,

«Добрый человек, не убивай меня; я убегу в дремучий лес и никогда уже не вернусь домой».
"Oh, dear huntsman, do not take my life; I will go away into the wild wood, and never come home again."
