Amor mi fa parlar, che m’è nel core
gran tempo stato e fatto n’ha su’ albergo,
e legato lo tien con lo splendore
e con que’ raggi a cui non valse usbergo,
quando passaron dentro col favore
degli occhi di colei, per cui rinvergo
la notte e ’l giorno pianti con sospiri,
e ch’è cagion di tutti e’ mie’ martìri.

Amor è que’ che mi guida e conduce,
nell’opera la qual a scriver vegno;
Amor è que’ ch’a far questo m’induce,
e che la forza mi dona e lo ’ngegno;
Amor è que’ ch’è mia scorta e mia luce,
e che di lui trattar m’ha fatto degno;
Amor è que’ che mi sforza ch’i’ dica
un’amorosa storia molto antica.

Però vo’ che l’onor sia sol di lui,
poi ch’egli è que’ che guida lo mio stile,
mandato dalla mia donna, lo cui
valor è tal ch’ogni altro mi par vile,
e che ’n tutte virtù avanza altrui,
e sopra ogni altra è più bella e gentile:
né non le mancheria veruna cosa,
sed ella fosse un poco più pietosa.

Or priego qui ciascun fedele amante
che siate in questo mia difesa e scudo
contro a ogni invidioso e mal parlante
e contro a chi è d’amor povero e ’gnudo;
e voi care mie donne tutte quante,
che non avete il cor gelato e crudo,
priego preghiate la mia donna altera
che non sia contro a me servo sì fera.
