Todas las tardes al salir de la escuela tenían los niños la costumbre de ir a jugar al jardín del gigante.
Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in the Giant’s garden.

Era un jardín grande y bello, con suave hierba verde.
It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass.

Acá y allá sobre la hierba brotaban hermosas flores semejantes a estrellas,
Here and there over the grass stood beautiful flowers like stars,

y había doce melocotoneros que en primavera se cubrían de flores delicadas rosa y perla y en otoño daban sabroso fruto.
and there were twelve peach-trees that in the spring-time broke out into delicate blossoms of pink and pearl, and in the autumn bore rich fruit.

Los pájaros se posaban en los árboles y cantaban tan melodiosamente que los niños dejaban de jugar para escucharles.
The birds sat on the trees and sang so sweetly that the children used to stop their games in order to listen to them.

-¡Qué felices somos aquí! -se gritaban unos a otros.
“How happy we are here!” they cried to each other.

Un día regresó el gigante.
One day the Giant came back.

Había ido a visitar a su amigo el ogro de Cornualles, y se había quedado con él durante siete años.
He had been to visit his friend the Cornish ogre, and had stayed with him for seven years.

Al cabo de los siete años había agotado todo lo que tenía que decir, pues su conversación era limitada, y decidió volver a su castillo.
After the seven years were over he had said all that he had to say, for his conversation was limited, and he determined to return to his own castle.

Al llegar vio a los niños que estaban jugando en el jardín.
When he arrived he saw the children playing in the garden.
↺
-¿Qué estáis haciendo aquí? -gritó con voz muy bronca. Y los niños se escaparon corriendo.
“What are you doing here?” he cried in a very gruff voice, and the children ran away.

-Mi jardín es mi jardín -dijo el gigante-; cualquiera puede entender eso, y no permitiré que nadie más que yo juegue en él.
“My own garden is my own garden,” said the Giant; “any one can understand that, and I will allow nobody to play in it but myself.”

So he built a high wall all round it, and put up a notice-board.

He was a very selfish Giant.

Los pobres niños no tenían ya dónde jugar.
The poor children had now nowhere to play.

Intentaron jugar en la carretera, pero la carretera estaba muy polvorienta y llena de duros guijarros, y no les gustaba.
They tried to play on the road, but the road was very dusty and full of hard stones, and they did not like it.

Solían dar vueltas alrededor del alto muro cuando terminaban las clases y hablaban del bello jardín que había al otro lado.
They used to wander round the high wall when their lessons were over, and talk about the beautiful garden inside.

“How happy we were there,” they said to each other.

Luego llegó la primavera y todo el campo se llenó de florecillas y de pajarillos.
Then the Spring came, and all over the country there were little blossoms and little birds.

Sólo en el jardín del gigante egoísta seguía siendo invierno.
Only in the garden of the Selfish Giant it was still winter.

A los pájaros no les interesaba cantar en él, ya que no había niños, y los árboles se olvidaban de florecer.
The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, and the trees forgot to blossom.

En una ocasión una hermosa flor levantó la cabeza por encima de la hierba, pero cuando vio el letrero sintió tanta pena por los niños que se volvió a deslizar en la tierra y se echó a dormir.
Once a beautiful flower put its head out from the grass, but when it saw the notice-board it was so sorry for the children that it slipped back into the ground again, and went off to sleep.

Los únicos que se alegraron fueron la nieve y la escarcha.
The only people who were pleased were the Snow and the Frost.

-La primavera se ha olvidado de este jardín -exclamaron-, así que viviremos aquí todo el año.
“Spring has forgotten this garden,” they cried, “so we will live here all the year round.”

La nieve cubrió la hierba con su gran manto blanco, y la escarcha pintó todos los árboles de plata.
The Snow covered up the grass with her great white cloak, and the Frost painted all the trees silver.

Luego invitaron al viento del Norte a vivir con ellas, y acudió.
Then they invited the North Wind to stay with them, and he came.

Iba envuelto en pieles, y bramaba todo el día por el jardín, y soplaba sobre las chimeneas hasta que las tiraba.
He was wrapped in furs, and he roared all day about the garden, and blew the chimney-pots down.

-Este es un lugar delicioso -dijo- Tenemos que pedir al granizo que nos haga una visita..
“This is a delightful spot,” he said, “we must ask the Hail on a visit.”

Y llegó el granizo.
So the Hail came.

Todos los días, durante tres horas, repiqueteaba sobre el tejado del castillo hasta que rompió casi toda la pizarra, y luego corría dando vueltas y más vueltas por el jardín tan deprisa como podía.
Every day for three hours he rattled on the roof of the castle till he broke most of the slates, and then he ran round and round the garden as fast as he could go.
