SALEN PRIMERO: JUGADORES, EL PRÍNCIPE ZVIEZDICH, KAZARIN Y SHPRIJ

(Sentados alrededor de una mesa y jugando a los naipes, rodeados de curiosos).

JUGADOR 1º- Iván Ilich, hago juego.

BANQUERO. - Comience nomás.

JUGADOR 1º- Van cien rublos.

BANQUERO. - Aceptado.

JUGADOR 2º- Yo continúo.

JUGADOR 3º- Usted tiene que mejorar su suerte, pues no le ha ido muy bien.

JUGADOR 5º- Hay que doblar las apuestas.

JUGADOR 3°- De acuerdo.

JUGADOR 2º- ¿Juegas toda la banca?... ¡No creo que resistas!

JUGADOR 4° - Escúcheme, querido amigo: el que hoy no se inclina no logrará nada.

JUGADOR 3º- (En voz baja al 1°). Mucho cuidado.

PRÍNCIPE ZVIEZDICH. - ¡Banca!

JUGADOR 2°- ¡Eh, Príncipe! La ira arruina la sangre; juegue sin enfadarse.

PRÍNCIPE. - Deje por esta vez de darme consejos.

BANQUERO. - ¡Cubro!

PRÍNCIPE. - ¡Demonios!

BANQUERO. - Permítame recoger.

JUGADOR 2°- (Burlonamente). Veo que con esa pasión está dispuesto a perder todo. ¿Qué valen sus galones?

PRÍNCIPE. - Los he logrado con honor y usted no podrá comprármelos.

JUGADOR 2º- (Sale murmurando entre dientes).

Debía ser más modesto con esta desgracia y a su edad.

(El príncipe bebe un vaso de limonada y se sienta aparte, pensativo).

SHPRIJ. - (Acercándose, comprensivo). ¿No le hace falta dinero, príncipe? Puedo ayudarlo en seguida.

No es mucho el interés... Estoy dispuesto a esperar cien años.

(El príncipe inclina fríamente la cabeza y no le responde. Shprij se aleja, disgustado. Salen Arbenin y otros. Arbenin entra, saludando; se acerca a la mesa y haciendo una señal se aleja con Kazarin).

ARBENIN. - ¿Qué tal? Ya no juegas, Kazarin, ¿eh?

KAZARIN. - Estoy mirando, hermano, cómo juegan los demás. ¡Y tú, queridísimo, te has casado, eres rico, te has vuelto un gran señor y has olvidado a tus camaradas!

ARBENIN. - Sí, es cierto, hace mucho que no juego con vosotros.

KAZARIN. - ¿Siempre ocupado?
